Storm Eowyn Weather Warning! Ten Ways to Protect Your Property

The Met Office has warned that Storm Eowyn is approaching the UK and homeowners are already bracing themselves for strong winds and heavy rain. Preparing your property before the storm arrives is crucial to minimise potential damage and keep your home and family safe. Here are ten essential steps to protect your property:
  1. Inspect fences and sheds

Loose fence panels and insecure garden sheds are particularly vulnerable during a storm. Walk around your property and check for any loose or damaged panels. Reinforce or repair them to prevent them from being blown into your property or your neighbour's. For sheds, ensure doors and windows are securely fastened.
  1. Secure garden furniture and accessories

Outdoor furniture, ornaments and other items can easily become flying objects in high winds, causing damage to windows, walls and other structures. Store smaller items indoors or in a shed, and secure larger items like trampolines with heavy-duty ties or weights.
  1. Check for overhanging branches

Overhanging branches can pose a significant threat during storms. Trim back any branches that are close to your house, garden buildings or power lines. This will reduce the risk of falling debris damaging your property.
  1. Inspect your roof

Loose or cracked roof tiles and slates are susceptible to being dislodged in high winds, potentially causing further damage. Conduct a visual inspection of your roof and replace any damaged tiles. If you're unsure about the condition of your roof, consider hiring a professional to perform a detailed inspection in calmer weather.
  1. Clear gutters and drains

Clogged gutters and drains can lead to water pooling, which increases the risk of leaks and flooding. Ensure gutters and downpipes are securely attached and free of debris. Check that all drains around your property are clear to allow water to flow away efficiently.
  1.  Secure bins

Wheelie bins are notorious for being blown over or away in strong winds, creating hazards and littering your property. Store bins in a sheltered area or weigh them down to prevent them from moving.
  1. Protect windows and doors

Close curtains and blinds to minimise the risk of injury from shattered glass if a window breaks. Ensure all doors and windows are tightly closed and locked.
  1. Check your drains and driveway

Heavy rain can quickly lead to localised flooding. If your property is prone to pooling water, consider installing sandbags or flood barriers as a precaution. Regularly check that your driveway and surrounding areas have proper drainage to handle excess water.
  1. Prepare for power cuts

Storms can cause power outages. Keep torches, candles and batteries on hand, and ensure mobile phones are fully charged. If you rely on medical equipment that requires electricity, have a backup plan in place.
  1. Review your insurance

Finally, ensure your home insurance policy is up to date and provides adequate coverage for storm damage. This will give you peace of mind knowing you are financially protected in the event of any significant damage.
