10 UK Cybercrime Statistics

Did you know as of October 2022, 39% of UK businesses have experienced a cyber attack, the same as in 2021. However, the figure has dropped since 2020 (46%).

  • According to 31% of these businesses, they were attacked at least once a week.
  • During 2021, cybercrime cost UK businesses an average of £4200. It is estimated that this number increased to £19,400 solely for medium and large businesses.
  • As of October 2022, phishing remains the most common cyber threat facing UK businesses (83% of identified attacks).
  • In the UK, 82% of business boards and senior management consider cyber security to be a high priority. In 2021, this number was 77%.
  • The number of UK businesses that have taken action to identify cyber security risks has increased from 52% in 2021 to 54% in October 2022. However, this percentage has decreased from 64% in 2020.
  • The risk posed by their immediate suppliers is assessed by 13% of UK businesses.
  • Approximately 19% of UK businesses have a formal incident response plan.
  • 39% of UK businesses have assigned roles should a cyber incident occur.
  • 43% of UK businesses are insured against cyber attacks in 2022
  • The most common type of cybercrime in the UK is phishing attacks, which come from hackers impersonating an organisation through emails or online.
